The curriculum of the Department of Midwifery of the Faculty of Health and Welfare Professions of Alexander Technical Educational Institute of Thessaloniki must cover fully the scientific and technological training of the department's graduates on issues of Midwifery, Gynaecology, Neonatology, Professional Ethics, Family Planning, Sex Education, Research, Prevention and Health Education.
The mission of the Department is the development and dissemination of knowledge regarding science and technology through teaching and applied research. In addition, the provision of the necessary assets that provide proper training to students for their scientific and professional career in Greece, in the countries of the European Union, and internationally.
The graduates of the department acquire the necessary scientific and technological knowledge and skills, in order to professionally work, either on their own or in collaboration with other scientists, as male or female midwifes.

Further Information

The purpose of the department is the parallel theoretical and clinical training of students in modern scientific data of Obstetric, Gynaecological and Neonatal Healthcare. The purpose of the department is the development of multiple skills, with regard to communication, consulting, health education, administration and organization of Health Units. An important parameter for the development of these objectives is the promotion of applied research in the field of health. Tuition in the department follows the organisation chart of the Technological Educational Institutes of Greece. It is deployed in seven semesters of studies, which include courses of theoretical and laboratory interactive education, along with clinical practice in Healthcare Units. The curriculum has been developed based on the principles of the bio-psychological model for health. Students firstly attend the courses of general direction and the courses of the Ethics - Economics - Law and Humanitarian Studies group (D.O.N.A.) before attending specialisation courses. The final section of studies includes the six-month practical training in the profession and the issuing of dissertation. The Practical Training in the profession is conducted at domestic or foreign Hospital Institutions, Primary, Secondary or Tertiary, which include clinics in the field of mother - child and gynaecology - surgery. During practical training, students are called to develop their independence with regard to the exercise of midwifing and the conduct of normal labour under the supervision and evaluation of the persons responsible for training during practice.

Relation To Employment

The title of studies is necessary for the exercise of the profession of Midwife. The graduates of the Department of Midwifery can work on their own, provided they have worked for two years, based on the subject of their education, in a hospital or other healthcare establishment accredited for this purpose, and after acquiring a relevant license by the Ministry of Health.

Transitions

Access to this type of qualification have those who have completed at least the secondary education (level 4).
Holders of such qualifications gain access to study programmes at the same level or at level 7 or 8.
