The graduate of the Postgraduate Programme of the Department of Food Technology of Athens Technological Educational Institute acquires the following:
KNOWLEDGE: Specialised and advanced knowledge related to the food science and technology, which are required for the development of products and processes and the production of high quality, safe foods.
SKILLS: The graduate of the Postgraduate Programme shall have the necessary and high-level general and specific scientific technical knowledge, skills, and capacities, in order to be able, on his/her own, to design, program, organise, coordinate, manage, evaluate, control, and develop innovative operations related to the processing, storage, distribution and control of foods, by making use of, developing and pushing forward the relevant research and knowhow.
COMPETENCES: The graduate of the Postgraduate Programme shall be capable of applying, in a documented way, with safety, responsibility, and effectiveness, the modern and advanced methods and techniques taught both at theoretical and practical level for the production of safe food, while also managing - running food production units and collaborating with educational, research institutions, and food businesses in Greece and abroad.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Following the completion of the postgraduate course of studies, the graduate of the Postgraduate Programme of the Food Technology Department is expected to:
- Have a wide understanding of the science and technology of food, and a thorough knowledge of the specialized fields of chemistry, microbiology, and processing - engineering of foods.
- Evaluate and know details about the effects of components, of the structure, and of the composition for the total quality of fresh and processed foods.
- Develop a skill to identify and analytically assess issues and processing problems, electing the suitable methods, while critically assessing the importance of experimental data or data of industrial production.
- Develop the ability of dealing with actual problems and finding a solution with regard to quality control, quality behaviour, and the technological factors that affect food safety.
- Develop skills with regard to the search and discovery of information, the evaluation, use, and communication thereof.
- Develop the ability to undertake and conduct research on food science.

The subject of the autonomous and innovative Postgraduate Programme of Study of the Department of Food Technology of Athens Technological Educational Institute is Food Science and Technology, with two directions: Food Processing, Preservation and Innovation, and Food Quality Management.
The general purpose of the Programme is to equip the student with specialised knowledge of food science and technology, while applying them in the development of products and processes for the production of high quality, safe foods.

Holders of qualifications that belong to this type may work either as self-employed or in positions of responsibility in companies and organizations in the private or in the public sector.

Transitions

Access to this type of qualification have those who hold a Bachelor Degree (level 6). The selection of graduate students is mainly based on the following criteria: the overall grade of the Bachelor Degree, the grades in undergraduate courses that are relevant with the subjects of the Master’s program, the performance in thesis, where is foreseen at the undergraduate level and any research activity of the candidate. The detailed application of the above mentioned criteria, the definition of additional criteria or the conducting of examinations and interviews, the results of which are taken into account in the selection, are determined by decision of the relevant Department.
Holders of such qualifications gain access to study programmes at the same level or at level 8.
