Description
The Integrated Master's Degree in Environmental Engineering is awarded by the Department of Environmental Engineering of the School of Engineering at the Democritus University of Thrace upon successful completion of a five-year programme of study comprising ten (10) academic semesters and 300 ECTS credits. The qualification integrates undergraduate and master's level studies into a single, unified academic programme without requiring completion of a separate postgraduate degree. In accordance with the applicable legislation, the qualification is classified at Level 7 of the Hellenic and European Qualifications Frameworks and certifies the acquisition of advanced scientific knowledge, specialised skills and high-level competences in the field of Environmental Engineering, providing the academic and professional rights associated with the Diploma of Environmental Engineer.
Relation to Employment
The programme prepares graduates for careers in the design, construction, operation and management of environmental infrastructure, water resources management, wastewater and solid waste treatment, air pollution control, renewable energy technologies, environmental management, research and consulting.
Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities
Admission to the program requires a Secondary School Leaving Certificate (High School Diploma) and successful participation in national-level examinations.
Knowledge
• Graduates possess fundamental knowledge of mathematics, physics, environmental chemistry, biology–ecology and environmental microbiology, as well as applied informatics and environmental economics.
• They possess specialised knowledge of physical, chemical and biochemical processes, ecological engineering, hydrology, fluid mechanics, waste management, drinking-water technologies and air-pollution control.
• Depending on their study track, they acquire specialised knowledge in atmosphere, energy and climate change, or in water and soil protection technologies and the sustainable urban environment.
Skills
• They conduct environmental measurements in air, water, soil and waste, and evaluate, develop and integrate environmental monitoring, simulation and management systems.
• They analyse the environmental impacts of projects and activities and design and apply appropriate technologies to reduce or minimise such impacts.
• They prepare Environmental Impact Assessments and carry out techno-economic analyses and the planning of environmental protection projects.
Competences
• They apply the principles of physical, chemical and biochemical processes to address complex environmental engineering problems, taking technological and socioeconomic criteria into account.
• They contribute to the application of renewable energy technologies, bioclimatic design and energy-saving technologies in buildings and settlements, while applying relevant environmental legislation and policies.
• They are able to undertake professional and consultancy activities involving the study, research and management of environmental problems in the public and private sectors or as self-employed professionals.
