Description

The Integrated Master's Degree in Biological Applications and Technologies is offered by the Department of Biological Applications and Technologies of the School of Health Sciences of the University of Ioannina. The programme provides comprehensive scientific education in the life sciences, with emphasis on molecular, cellular and organismal biology, genetics, biochemistry, biotechnology, ecology, evolution and applications of Biology. Students acquire theoretical knowledge, laboratory experience and practical skills for the application of modern biological methodologies and technologies.

Relation to Employment

The programme prepares scientists for employment in biological and biotechnology laboratories, research, biodiversity and environmental management and protection, industrial and biotechnology applications, as well as educational institutions and public organisations. It also provides opportunities for continuation of studies at postgraduate and doctoral level.

Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities

Admission is carried out through the Panhellenic Examinations or transfer examinations, in accordance with the applicable legislation. To obtain the degree, students are required to successfully complete ten semesters of study and accumulate 300 ECTS credits. The programme leads to a single and undivided degree (Integrated Master).

Knowledge

Graduates of the Department, upon completion of the programme, are expected to:
•Possess comprehensive knowledge of the fundamental and applied sciences of Biology and the life sciences.
•Understand the principles of molecular, cellular, developmental, structural and evolutionary Biology.
•Have knowledge of genetics, biochemistry, biotechnology and bioinformatics.
•Understand ecological and evolutionary processes, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.
•Have knowledge of contemporary biological and biotechnological applications and scientific research methods.

Skills

Upon completion of the programme, students will be able to:
•Apply laboratory and experimental methods for the study of biological systems.
•Use modern techniques in molecular biology, biotechnology, bioinformatics and data analysis.
•Analyse and evaluate biological, ecological and environmental data.
•Design and implement research projects and interpret scientific results.
•Use scientific tools to address problems related to biodiversity, the environment and biological applications.
