Description
The Integrated Master's Degree of the Department of Spatial Planning, Urban Planning and Regional Development provides interdisciplinary education in the planning, regulation and balanced and sustainable development of space. The field of study combines engineering sciences with economics and development, the environment, infrastructure, management, geography and spatial social sciences, as well as analytical methods and tools based on the use of computers.
The study programme has a five-year duration and comprises ten academic semesters, compulsory and elective courses, a Diploma Thesis and a two-month practical training period. Its main areas include urban planning, spatial planning and infrastructure, economics and regional development, geography and the environment, spatial social sciences, technical foundation courses, and mathematics and computer science.
Relation to Employment
Graduates are qualified as Spatial Planning and Regional Development Engineers and may work in public services and organizations, international organizations, research centres, development companies and organizations, private planning and consultancy offices, construction companies, real estate management and investment companies and other organizations.
Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities
Admission is through the national entrance examinations or qualifying (transfer) examinations, in accordance with the applicable legislation. The award of the degree requires the successful completion of ten semesters of study and the accumulation of 300 ECTS credits. The program leads to the award of an Integrated Master's Degree.
Knowledge
Graduates acquire knowledge of urban planning, spatial planning, physical and human geography, regional development and policy, geographic information management, the spatial allocation of human activities, spatial development programming, natural resource management, and project and programme management. They also develop an understanding of the human-made and natural environment and knowledge of spatial analysis issues, together with the ability to scientifically analyse and classify relevant information.
Skills
Graduates develop skills in analysing, designing, implementing and evaluating spatial intervention policies and programmes, including urban and spatial planning, regional policy and local development. They use contemporary methodologies and tools, including geographic information systems, quantitative and econometric methods and decision-making tools, and are able to develop and present structured methodological programmes and research proposals.
Competences
Graduates are able to identify the functioning of the human-made and natural environment and its problems and dysfunctions, scientifically analyse and organise space from the regional scale to the scale of building design, and formulate evidence-based proposals for spatial planning, regional policy, local and regional development, urban governance and programming.
