Description

The Department of Music Studies belongs to the School of Philosophy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and is dedicated to the advancement of musicology and music research in all contemporary fields. The programme combines scientific education, theoretical studies, artistic practice and research, while also offering a Music Specialization Programme including instrumental performance and Byzantine chant. The programme lasts five (5) years and leads to the award of an Integrated Master's Degree (EQF Level 7).

Relation to Employment

Graduates may pursue careers in general and music education, music schools, conservatories, scientific libraries and music archives, musicological research centres, cultural organisations, music publishing, concert halls, orchestras, choirs, music theatres, media organisations, as well as in music technology and audio engineering.

Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities

Admission is through the Panhellenic examinations or transfer examinations, in accordance with the applicable legislation. To obtain the degree, students must successfully complete ten semesters of study and earn 300 ECTS credits. The programme leads to a Unified and Undivided Postgraduate-Level Degree (Integrated Master).

Knowledge

Graduates possess comprehensive knowledge of musicology, music theory and history, historical and systematic musicology, ethnomusicology, Byzantine musicology, music pedagogy, music technology, music analysis and aesthetics, music research and documentation, as well as music performance through the Music Specialization Programme. They understand the historical, social, cultural and technological dimensions of music and its relationship with education and culture.

Skills

Graduates are able to analyse, interpret and document musical works, apply musicological research methods, use contemporary technologies in music creation and research, prepare academic studies, organize and manage musical and cultural projects, teach music, collaborate in artistic and research environments and apply music performance skills through the programme's specializations.

Competences

Graduates are competent to pursue professional careers as musicologists, music educators, researchers, performers, professionals in cultural organizations and specialists in music education and music technology. They are capable of undertaking scientific, artistic and educational projects independently or collaboratively, designing and implementing research and cultural activities, evaluating musical data and demonstrating critical thinking, creativity, academic integrity and professional responsibility.
