Description

The Integrated Master's Degree of the Department of Ichthyology and Aquatic Environment is a five-year study programme comprising ten academic semesters. Successful completion of the first study cycle leads to the award of an Integrated Master's Degree at Level 7 of the National and European Qualifications Frameworks. 
The academic field of the Department focuses on Ichthyology, aquatic production and sustainable management of the aquatic environment. The Programme aims to educate scientists capable of developing, applying and transferring expertise and technological innovation related to the production, processing and distribution of fisheries and aquaculture products, as well as the sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems.  
The Study Programme is structured around four main axes:
- Fisheries
- Aquatic Animal and Crop Production
- Catch Technology and Trade
- Aquatic Environment Management

Relation to Employment

The Integrated Master's Degree is linked to professional activities in aquatic environment management, fisheries, aquaculture, and fisheries products and food technology. Professional activities include the protection and management of marine and inland aquatic environments, sustainable management of fish stocks, aquaculture production and management of aquaculture units, as well as the processing, packaging, quality control, safety and marketing of fisheries products.

Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities

Admission to the Programme requires a Unified High School Diploma and a high score in the National Higher Education Entrance Examinations. Following completion of the qualification, graduates may continue to postgraduate studies in Greece or abroad.

Knowledge

The graduate acquires scientific knowledge in the main fields of Ichthyology, including the production, processing and distribution of fisheries products, as well as the sustainable protection and management of aquatic ecosystems. The graduate also acquires specialised knowledge and scientific methodology in fisheries, aquaculture, fisheries processing and trade, aquatic environment and aquatic organisms.

Skills

The graduate is able to analyse the basic structures of the aquatic environment and their relationship with fisheries production and fish farming, use aquatic resource management tools and address contemporary environmental issues. The graduate can also develop, apply and transfer expertise and technological innovations in marine ecosystem management, fisheries and aquaculture.

Competences

The graduate demonstrates developed environmental thinking and the ability to study and analyse environmental issues related to fisheries and fish farming. The graduate is able to evaluate approaches to contemporary environmental problems, undertake actions to raise public awareness regarding the proper management and protection of the aquatic environment, and use economic tools to evaluate alternative policies and actions.
