Description

The study programme of the Department of Animal Science is a five-year programme leading to an Integrated Master's Degree, corresponding to Level 7 of the National and European Qualifications Frameworks. It provides theoretical and practical education in Animal Science, covering animal physiology, nutrition, genetics and genomics, genetic improvement and reproduction of farm animals, as well as the organisation and management of integrated animal production systems. It also includes feed technology, biotechnology applications, animal welfare and behaviour, hygiene and safety of animal products, and the production of high-quality food of animal origin.

Relation to Employment

The programme provides scientific and practical training for activities related to animal production, the breeding and management of farm animals, nutrition and genetic improvement, feed technology, hygiene and safety of animal products, and the management of integrated animal production systems. The Department also provides practical training and activities connecting studies with the labour market

Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities

Admission to the Programme requires a Unified High School Diploma and a high score in the National Higher Education Entrance Examinations. Following completion of the qualification, graduates may continue to postgraduate studies in Greece or abroad.

Knowledge

The graduate acquires knowledge of animal physiology, nutrition, genetics, genomics, genetic improvement and reproduction of farm animals. Knowledge is also developed in animal husbandry, ruminant and monogastric production, feed technology, biotechnology applications, animal welfare and behaviour, hygiene and safety of animal products, and public health.     

Skills

The graduate is able to apply scientific knowledge to the breeding and management of farm animals, animal nutrition and genetic improvement, feed utilisation and integrated animal production systems. The graduate can also apply methods for controlling the hygiene and safety of animal products and use laboratory and biotechnological methods.

Competences

The graduate is able to integrate scientific knowledge for the planning, organisation and management of integrated animal production systems, assess the effects of production practices on animal welfare and product quality, and address scientific and technical issues in animal production.
