Description

Upon completion of their studies, graduates of the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment Management acquire the necessary scientific and technological knowledge, abilities and skills to operate as Foresters and Natural Environment Managers, particularly in the following areas: preparation of or participation in the elaboration of any kind of forestry and environmental studies related to management, opening and protection of terrestrial natural ecosystems (forests, woodlands, bare and grazing land, etc.), as well as management and protection of the natural environment (management studies of habitats, nature reserves, specific environmental studies, etc.).
Management, protection, organization and functioning of forest ecosystems, protected areas, urban, suburban green, forest nurseries, reforestation programs, basins, shelters, game farms and controlled hunting areas, mountain pastures, ecotourism installations and facilities etc.
Planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation of any technical infrastructure in the forestry area. Design and execution of Forest Techniques projects.
Study of Hydrology and Geomorphology of mountain areas. Study of Hydrological and Hydraulic parameters of mountain natural open ducts.
Study of torrential phenomena and management of river basins and deposit cones. Study, design and construction of mountain torrent and hydro-technical works. Snow and Snow Accommodation Management.
Development and implementation of methods for improving wood growth and production, harvesting and rational use of wood, extraction of forest products, their processing and marketing.
Control of quality and relevance, as well as handling and processing of products (direct and indirect) derived from the sustainable use of renewable forest resources.
Application of recovery and restoration methods and techniques of degraded land natural ecosystems.
Preparation and implementation of programs of natural resources repertory and mapping and monitoring of terrestrial natural ecosystems using Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Development and implementation of monitoring and evaluation systems of environmental impact of projects and activities in the natural environment.
Application of methods and techniques of operational research, policy and administration for the development of renewable resources.
Implementation of prevention systems and methods and tackling of forest fires.
Development and implementation of programs for improving forestry and rangeland plants.
Design and implementation of applied research programs relating to all activities on terrestrial natural ecosystems.
Advising on environmental policy issues and oversight on implementing provisions of environmental legislation and standards of projects environmental compatibility in terrestrial natural ecosystems.
Staffing Services of the Public and Private Sector, whose purpose is to design and implement programs of protection, development and, in general, management of the natural environment as well as the execution of public and private projects concerning the natural environment.
Planning, organization and provision of environmental education in primary and secondary education in the public and private sectors.
Production and marketing of propagating material for forest trees and shrubs.
Use and marketing of pesticides of forest interest.
Development and implementation of technology in all areas of the subject of Forestry.

Further Information

The Department aims to promote the development and transmission of knowledge in science, technology and techniques applied in Forestry and Projects of the Natural Environment through teaching and applied research and to provide students with the necessary skills to ensure an excellent training for their scientific and professional career, development and prospects.
The duration of basic studies in the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment Management is eight (8) I16semesters, including six months of practical training.
During the seven (7) semesters, studies include theoretical teaching, practical exercises, laboratory exercises, seminars and study visits. In the eighth semester practical training in the profession takes place and the preparation of the Thesis is completed.
All courses listed in the Department's course list are classified into two categories:
a. Compulsory Courses
b. Compulsory Selection Courses
In terms of content, both compulsory and compulsory selection courses are classified into four categories:
1. General Foundation Courses including, among others, subjects about positive, technical, biological and ecological sciences etc.
2. Special Foundation Courses including, among others, subjects about specific technical and biological knowledge objects etc.
3. specialty Courses including, among others, subjects related to the handling of vegetation, grassland management, forest roads, mountainous water control projects, etc.
4. Special category of courses on Administration - Economy - Law - Humanities with subjects such as: Forest Economics and Evaluation, Forestry - Environmental Policy and Law, Forest Management, etc. These subjects are essential for the organization and administration of services, businesses, areas management agencies and organizations related to the specialty.
Specialty Courses from the Group of Compulsory Selection Courses enable students of the 5th, 6th and 7th semesters choose a total of four courses.
Teaching in the Department focuses on fundamental principles, applications and relationships of various forestry issues and natural environmental projects for integrated education of students. Lectures, which relate to the theoretical analysis and synthesis, are accompanied by workshops in the form of laboratory exercises, working groups and practice exercises.
Practice exercises, as applications of the theory, are declared in the theoretical part of the course and, by their nature, require an active participation of students throughout the semester. They include tutorials, case studies, individual and group work, literature reviews, video projections, etc.
Special attention is given to the development of personal skills of the student, including the development of initiatives, critical thought and ability to solve problems.
The preparation of Thesis ensures the deepening of the Department seniors in a serious topical applied research topic or an object that is directly related to the specialization of studies.
Exercise in the Profession (Practice) lasts six (6) calendar months. It is guided and evaluated, and forms an essential part of education.

Relation To Employment

The qualification is essential for practicing the profession of Forestry Technologist.

Transitions

Access to this type of qualification have those who have completed at least the secondary education (level 4).
Holders of such qualifications gain access to study programmes at the same level or at level 7 or 8.
