Description

Knowledge: The Department aims to create graduates who, having the qualification of a spherical cognitive view on Design, are able to intervene creatively in every stage of the lifecycle of a product, system, service, starting from the necessity for its existence, its form, the manufacture of concepts, up to the design of its production.
Skills: The graduates of the department are capable of understanding a design problem and create the respective System or Product, ensuring its aesthetics and user-friendliness.
Competences: The graduates are capable of using creatively various cognitive tools and methodologies from different disciplines in order to design products and systems. Due to their significant methodological infrastructure, graduates are capable of increasing their competences during the progress of their career.
Learning outcomes: The graduates of the department can develop utilities, software and services, while developing composite systems.

Further Information

The duration of the Postgraduate Studies Programme (PSP) of the Department is five years. It has been structured in a way that meets the objectives of the Departments, while being aligned with internationally acknowledged practices. The programme of studies does not use cycles of courses. The Department considers the courses of the first three years as compulsory core courses, which refer approx. to 40% of the courses on offer and approx. to 60% of the courses required to graduate. Each course refers to ECTS credits; overall, 300 ECTS credits are required to graduate.

The curriculum contains the following types / categories of courses:
Compulsory (Y): This is a course for which a passing grade is required in order to meet the requirements to graduate.
Preparatory (Pr): This is a compulsory course, required in order to meet the requirements to graduate.
Direction Compulsory Elective (YEK): This is an elective course under specific limitation (obligations) with regard to cognitive directions.
Free Elective (EE): Courses with no obligation. Upon selection and after obtaining a passing grade, they are added in order to gather the necessary ECTS to graduate.
Tutorial (F): This is a part of a course where additional hours are added for the practice of students, when considered necessary.

The curriculum contains three groups of courses:
(a) The Group of the core / compulsory courses which is offered, as possible, in the first 3 academic years and includes all necessary courses for the spherical education of the product and system design engineer, which are useful and necessary for the three cognitive directions of the Department.
(b) The Group of Compulsory Elective course, of the Practical Training and of Studios 7x, which is offered, as possible, to the fourth year of studies and refer to the theoretical, multi-faceted specialisation of the product and system design engineer. The student is responsible for the level of engagement with each cognitive direction within the context of rules set.
(c) The Group of elective courses and the dissertation offered in the last year of studies, which complete in terms of knowledge the directions and the specialisation of the product and systems design engineer.

During their studies, students are capable of expanding their knowledge in one of the following three cognitive directions:
GD1 Interactive System design
GD2 Computer-aided Design
GD3 Service Design
These three cognitive directions do not comprise a vertical specialisation in specific applications, but in scientifically determined cognitive backgrounds that overall support, enrich, bolster and strengthen the cognitive profile of the Department, thus offering the student with a multi-faceted and strong scientific background, and with a group of tools that cover the entire application scope of Design.

Relation To Employment

Holders of qualifications that belong to this type may work either as self-employed or in positions of responsibility in companies and organizations in the private or in the public sector.

Transitions

Access to this type of qualification have those who have completed at least the secondary education (level 4).
Holders of such qualifications gain access to study programmes at the same level or at level 7 or 8.
