Description

The graduates of the Department of Physical Therapy bear the professional title of "Physical Therapists" or "Physiotherapists" and upon completing their studies acquire the necessary scientific and technological knowledge, competences, and skills, in order to, autonomously, or in collaboration with physicians following a medical diagnosis relevant to the prevention, improve and restore pathological situations that are congenital and acquired, including trauma to the skeletal, muscular, neural, respiratory, and cardiovascular system, screen the patient, with regard to physical therapy, and select, organize and safety conduct the physical treatment required for the case at hand (Government Gazette 222/17-09-2003).
Specifically, the graduate of the Department is capable of proceeding to and performing the physical therapy practices following a written diagnosis by a physician and its relevant instructions, and specifically:
• Restore the patient by using, following a screening in terms of physical therapy, the most suitable, effective, and safe specific means, methods and techniques, such as kinesiotherapy, special mobilization techniques, the increase and reduction of temperature, electrical stimulation, biofeedback, pain recession, ergonomic training of the patient, and the improvement of the muscular functional capacity.
• Evaluate the progress or stagnancy of the patient's situation and modify their rehabilitation programme.
• Conduct research programmes advancing the science of Physical Therapy.
• Design and apply programmes for preventing and restoring dysfunctions for which Physical Therapy is called to deal, for individuals, groups and communities, schools and professional areas.
• Applies the rules of ethics of the relevant field.
• Train and support the patient and their family, in order to ensure the patient's functional independence.

The mission of the Department is the promotion, development, and transmission of knowledge regarding the Technology and Science of Physical Therapy, with suitable theoretical teaching, the wider laboratory and Practical Exercise, and the applied research, with the purpose of providing students and graduates with the necessary assets that ensure their proper education for their scientific and professional career and development.
Within its mission, the Department of Physical Therapy:
Keeps track of the international developments in the scientific, educational and vocational sector.
• Develops collaborations with other Higher Educational Institutes of the country and abroad.
• Collaborates with productive units, labour and other bodies, relevant to the subject.
• Uses modern technologies in education.
• Conducts applied research on the subject of Physical Therapy.
• Helps its students develop the competences and skills that shall make them capable and competitive at a national and international level.
• Follows any developments and changes (educational, financial, and social) in the subject of the Department, within the national and international environment.
• Is constantly ready to accept, analyse, and integrate new views, always with the purpose of ensuring and improving the quality of studies for the Department.

Relation To Employment

The graduate of the Department of Physical Therapy may work as a Physiotherapist, as per the relevant Greek law.

Transitions

Access to this type of qualification have those who have completed at least the secondary education (level 4).
Holders of such qualifications gain access to study programmes at the same level or at level 7 or 8.
