Description

Upon completing their studies, the graduates of the Department of Electronics will have acquired specialised knowledge in order to be capable of engaging with, either on their own or in collaboration with other scientists, the study, research, and application of technology on modern and special fields of electronics in the private and public sector, as specified in Presidential Decree 346/8/06/1989 stipulating the professional rights of certified Technologist Engineers of the Department of Electronics of the School of Technological Applications of the Technological Educational Institutions.

The curriculum aims to the provision of the necessary and specialized scientific and technological knowledge, as well as of practical experiences on the following subjects:
1. Study, design, production of electronic elements, modules, devices and systems.
2. a) Preparation of study, design and production, b) supervision of manufacture, c) assembly, d) maintenance of facility, e) handling of control and operation of modules, devices and systems in the following sectors:
a) telecommunications, b) audiovisual sector c) radio-TV, d) security and fire safety, e) electronic measurement instruments, f) power electronics g) computers and networks, h) medical instruments, i) industrial electronics and automations
3. Preparation of technical designs, feasibility studies and the issuing of expert opinions on the above fields.
4. Standardisation and certification of quality for the devices and instruments used in the above sectors.
5. Organization and management of businesses active in electronics and the applications thereof in the above sectors.
6. Conduct of applied research in the above fields.
7. Use of the knowledge provided with a suitable supervised practical exercise, in fields relevant to the subject of the department.
During the design of the curriculum, various criteria were taken into consideration and the maximum possible effort was made in order to the curriculum to meet these criteria. Some of these criteria are the following:
- Offer of integrated education on the cognitive field of the Department's direction.
- Completeness with regard to the cognitive subjects of the specialty.
- Balance between the main and supplementary cognitive subjects.
- Avoidance of overlapping.
- Avoidance of paying excessive attention to specific courses versus others.
- Progressive passing from core to specialized courses.
- Provision of elective courses.
- Focus on the development of research methodology.
The duration of studies in the department of Electronics is eight (8) semesters. During the first seven (7) semesters, the studies include theoretical teaching and laboratory exercises, seminars, educational visits, and the conduct of personal or group coursework. The last semester includes the required practical training on the profession and the drafting of a dissertation on application issues regarding specialized scientific and technological knowledge.
The first semester of study includes mainly general background courses, such as Mathematics, Physics, Informatics, Electronics, etc. These are followed by special background - core courses, such as Telecommunications, Digital Electronics, Microprocessors - Microcontrollers, Automated Control Systems, etc. From the sixth semester, the studies include specialization courses that offer students specialized knowledge.
Each semester of core studies includes five (5) to six (6) compulsory courses with approx. 24 hours of teaching per week, which equals to 30 ECTS credits. The allocation of the hours leads to a workload of 750 hours on average per semester. The curriculum of the 7 semesters includes 39 compulsory courses.
The compulsory courses of the curriculum are divided into courses of General Background, Special Background, Specialty, and courses of Administration, Finance, Law, and Humanitarian Studies.

Relation To Employment

Holders of qualifications that belong to this type may work either as self-employed or in positions of responsibility in companies and organizations in the private or in the public sector.

Transitions

Access to this type of qualification have those who have completed at least the secondary education (level 4).
Holders of such qualifications gain access to study programmes at the same level or at level 7 or 8.
