In order to acquire the degree of the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment Management, students are obliged to attend and be successfully examined in courses (compulsory and elective), successfully perform practical training in the 8th semester, and prepare a dissertation. The application of the curriculum aims to train scientists who are capable of understanding and managing forests and land natural ecosystems. Upon graduating, students must be capable of dealing with the complicated problems of the practice and have a positive contribution to the development of Greek forestry, with the purpose of protecting and rationally using our forests and the natural environment. The graduates of the Department acquire the skills for the collection of forest products, the quality assessment and the identification of wood, about the mechanical and technical wood technology, about the industrial production of wood products, of wood biomass and energy, about the management of the wild fauna, about biodiversity and environmental impacts, about the management of land and water natural ecosystems, the management of pastures, the manufacture and maintenance of forest roadworks, the forest-technical arrangement of torrents, about landscaping and soil fixation, the hydrological operation of drainage basins, the financial analysis and assessment of forest exploitations and investments, statistical analysis, forest registrations, the preparation of management plans, remote sensing and analysis of satellite images, the design of areas of forest recreation, studies for the development of ecotourism, environmental training, further training and environmental awareness programmes, botanical studies, establishment and operation of nurseries with forest and ornamental species, the production and marketing of their propagation material, the establishment and management of botanical gardens, parks, and tree alleys, seed producing gardens, rural and forest systems, business plantations for forest species used in the production of wood, fruit, biomass, secondary forest products, management and protection of reserves and of the biodiversity of land ecosystems, protection of forests from diseases, insect epidemics, gaseous pollution and climate change, management (prevention, preliminary action, treatment) and ecology of forest wildfires, studies for analysing soil, plant tissues, and waters, preparation of ecological studies regarding the forest species and the forests, impact studies and execution studies for landscaping and forest/environment restoration projects from any other project conducted in a forest and forest area, conduct of reforestation projects, of urban and suburban green and for the fire protection of forests. The graduates of the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment Management are capable of analysing and composing the scientific data and the information, monitor scientific developments and apply suitable technologies in forestry and in the industrial exploitation of forest products, produce new ideas and scientific knowledge, handle in a scientific manner research and development projects, draft studies and perform projects related to forest, take decisions with scientific, professional and social responsibility, communicate with and collaborate in teams, at interdisciplinary and at an international level.
