Description

Knowledge: The graduate is capable of identifying, describing, understanding and interpreting, with an interdisciplinary and composite approach and use of geographical concepts, the environmental, social, financial, historical, political, institutional, and cultural views and dimensions of modern environmental, socioeconomic, and other phenomena and problems at a local, regional, national, and global level.

Skills: The graduate is capable of applying quantitative and qualitative techniques for the analysis of spatial and non-spatial data, and specifically techniques for Geoinformatics, Geographical Information Systems, Remote sensing, digital cartography, etc., and compose the results thereof for the comprehensive description, and specifically the visualization and interpretation of the multi-dimensional spatial themes under consideration.

Competences: The graduate is capable of:
- drafting studies for the civil, regional, rural, tourism, etc. development and design, the evaluation of developmental programmes / designs, mappings, etc.;
- processing spatial data and participating in group studies;
- preparing research proposals, draft applied studies and research, as well as drafting reports for research and other projects with a systematic and appropriate manner, using written speech, graphic design tools, etc.;
- apply the acquired knowledge for teaching the course of Geography in Primary and Secondary education;
- expand their knowledge to other thematic and geographic areas and cases dealing with new conditions;
- expand the knowledge of Geography by furthering their studies at a postgraduate level.

Further Information

The main objectives of the undergraduate programme of studies are the following: (a) professional, (b) academic / research, (c) educational.
The courses on offer are divided into compulsory, compulsory elective, and elective.
The compulsory courses offer core knowledge about the main thematic areas of Geography and the basic methodological tools that are necessary for the comprehensive training of a geographer, regardless of his/her specialisation.
The compulsory elective courses delve into four selected teams of cognitive areas of Geography - Natural Geography / Environment, Anthropogeography, Spatial Development and Design, Geoinformatics, while the elective courses cover more specific cognitive fields and specialized tools and methods.

Relation To Employment

The statutory establishment of the graduates of the Department of Geography of the Aegean University is described in Presidential Decree no. 147, which was published in Government Gazette 124/04.06.2002. Pursuant to law 3687/2008 (Government Gazette 159/Α/2008), the Geographers were included in the field of educators, of University Education 04.05, Professors of Natural Sciences, thus allowing the participating in the recruitment procedures held by the Supreme Council for Civil Personnel Selection (ASEP) and their recruitment as permanent educational personnel in Secondary Education, as well as their inclusion in the lists of substitutes and hourly-waged educators of branch University Education 04.05 (Professors of Natural Sciences and specifically Geologists).

Transitions

Access to this type of qualification have those who have completed at least the secondary education (level 4).
Holders of such qualifications gain access to study programmes at the same level or at level 7 or 8.
