Due to the multi-faceted character of tourism and the respective interdisciplinary character of education and research on issues of design, administration, and policy, the Postgraduate Studies Programme offers a comprehensive education programme which is focused on the following fields: a) tourism research (social, anthropological, statistical, geographical, and environmental), b) on the design of tourism at a national, regional and local level, c) on the analysis of the method for the administration and operation of tourism businesses, d) on the methods for promoting and selling tourism products, e) on the investigation of the basic parameters for sustainable tourism development, f) on the promotion of IT applications for tourism, g) on determining the major parameters of a tourism policy. Special emphasis is paid on the interdisciplinary approach of tourism and of its financial, social, environmental, and cultural aspects. As a result, the graduates of the Postgraduate Studies Programme may find employment in the following: 1. Research centres for macroeconomics, microeconomics and sociology studies regarding tourism. 2. Agencies for the physical and financial design of tourism development. 3) Public or private agencies for tourism consulting. 4) Bodies directing and managing sea, mountain, green or alternative tourism. 5) Agencies organising conferences and cultural events. 6) Tourism organisations. 7) Agencies organizing tourism promotion and advertising. 8) Departments of bodies responsible for the direction, operation, and management of museums, archaeological sites, natural and theme parks.

The subject of the interdepartmental postgraduate studies programme is the postgraduate training on the Design, Administration, and Policy of Tourism. The objectives include the basic education and systematic training of students on various issues concerning tourism and its development. Through the study and analysis of theoretical and experiential approaches of various scientific branches, such as Economics, Sociology, Social Anthropology, Business Administration, Environmental Science, Regional Development, Informatics and Marketing, students acquire the necessary theoretical background in order to understand the complexity and composition of tourism, by expanding their knowledge, sharpening their critical skills, and acquiring a multi-disciplinary view on tourism. The duration of the Master's Degree is set to three teaching semesters, two of which include compulsory attendance to courses, while the third includes the dissertation. The studies are completed following the successful completion of courses and dissertation, i.e. through the accumulation of at least 48 teaching units or 90 credits.

Relation To Employment

Holders of qualifications that belong to this type may work either as self-employed or in positions of responsibility in companies and organizations in the private or in the public sector.

Transitions

Access to this type of qualification have those who hold a Bachelor Degree (level 6). The selection of graduate students is mainly based on the following criteria: the overall grade of the Bachelor Degree, the grades in undergraduate courses that are relevant with the subjects of the Master’s program, the performance in thesis, where is foreseen at the undergraduate level and any research activity of the candidate. The detailed application of the above mentioned criteria, the definition of additional criteria or the conducting of examinations and interviews, the results of which are taken into account in the selection, are determined by decision of the relevant Department.
Holders of such qualifications gain access to study programmes at the same level or at level 8.
