Master's Degree in "Geography and Applied Geo-Informatics". Department of Geography. Faculty of Social Sciences. University of the Aegean.

Description

Upon acquiring the Master's Degree, the holder acquires the necessary scientific and technological knowledge, competences, and skills on Geography and Applied Geoinformatics.
Specifically, in direction A: "Applied Geoinformatics in Anthropogeography and Spatial Design", postgraduate students acquire the following competences:
- think of space and under anthropogeographical terms, and develop deep knowledge and understanding regarding basic and advanced anthropogeographic concepts and design concepts for space;
- apply methods of geoinformatics to investigate anthropogeographic subjects / phenomena and procedures;
- register anthropogeographic phenomena in maps, analyse them and draw conclusions;
- communicate the results of their research using combinations of the methods (e.g. written, orally, through graphics and maps), depending on the anthropogeographic subject, the purpose and the audience addressed;
- correlate and combine concepts and theories with the empirical act, by putting emphasis on geoinformatics applications;
- acquire experience by using methods and procedures of geoinformatics, useful in the labour market and for future employment;
- become capable, critical, and creative users of the anthropogeographical research methods, in order to become informed, responsible, and active citizens, and contribute to the development of an environmentally and financially sustainable socially just world.

In direction B: "Applied Geoinformatics in the Management of the Natural Environment and Risks", postgraduate students acquire the following competence:
- think spatially, incorporate physical-geographical phenomena and figures in space, and find spatial standards and models;
- define basic and advanced physical-geographical concepts, along those referring to the management of natural risks, and use the theoretical context for the resolution of problems;
- apply all means and methods of geoinformatics in order to expand and analyse physical-geographical phenomena and phenomena of risk management, and suggest solutions;
- communicate the results of their research using combinations of the methods (e.g. written, orally, through graphics and maps), depending on the physical-geographical / environmental / natural disaster subject, the purpose and the audience addressed;
- correlate with a critical view concepts and theories of geography with the empirical act, by putting emphasis on geoinformatics applications;
- register physical-geographical phenomena in maps, analyse them and draw conclusions;
- acquire experience by using methods and procedures of geoinformatics, useful in the labour market and for future employment;
- become capable, critical, and creative users of the physical-geographical research methods, in order to become informed, responsible, and active citizens, and contribute to the development of an environmentally and financially sustainable socially just world;

In general, the graduates of the PSP have the competence of coping with the study and research of actual issues and problems, and effectively participate in the labour market, by meeting its demands.
The learning outcomes of the PSP are the thorough knowledge of the combination of theories in natural and human geography, using all modern means and cutting edge methods for geoinformatics.

Further Information

The purpose of the Postgraduate Studies Programme is to provide theoretical and applied knowledge on the issues of the geographic area and of modern approaches for the management thereof, using methods and techniques of the Science of Geographical Information.

Geoinformatics develops and makes use of information technologies for the collection, management, analysis, modelling, and visualization of spatial and temporal data. In combination with the traditional methods and analyses techniques, geoinformatics supports the composite and interdisciplinary analysis of various physical and social phenomena and issues, along with decision taking for the treatment thereof.

Relation To Employment

Holders of qualifications that belong to this type may work either as self-employed or in positions of responsibility in companies and organizations in the private or in the public sector.

Transitions

Access to this type of qualification have those who hold a Bachelor Degree (level 6). The selection of graduate students is mainly based on the following criteria: the overall grade of the Bachelor Degree, the grades in undergraduate courses that are relevant with the subjects of the Master’s program, the performance in thesis, where is foreseen at the undergraduate level and any research activity of the candidate. The detailed application of the above mentioned criteria, the definition of additional criteria or the conducting of examinations and interviews, the results of which are taken into account in the selection, are determined by decision of the relevant Department.
Holders of such qualifications gain access to study programmes at the same level or at level 8.

Ways To Aquire

Qualifications of this type are acquired via formal education.
