Knowledge: The graduates of the Postgraduate Studies Programme with the Direction of "Special Training, Education and Rehabilitation" acquire knowledge on the fields of special education and rehabilitation.
Skills: The graduates of the PSP titled "Special Training, Education and Rehabilitation" are capable of:
- organising programmes of special education and rehabilitation;
- manufacturing educational material;
- making use of the support technology;
- apply procedures of educational evaluation in the fields of Reading, Writing, Mathematics, and Social Skills;
- design teaching programmes for students belonging to the various categories of educational needs and/or disabilities;
- select methods, techniques and implementation means for the various special educational programmes;
- create and implement programmes of educational and social integration.
Competences: Upon completing PSP "Special Training, Education and Rehabilitation", the graduates are capable of providing to persons with special educational needs and/or disabilities services of special training, education, and rehabilitation.

Specifically, for direction "Special Training, Education and Rehabilitation of Persons with Visual Disability:
Knowledge: The graduates of this direction acquire specialized knowledge over the cognitive domains related to visual disability.
Skills: The graduates of this direction are capable of:
- organizing programmes of special training, education, and rehabilitation for individuals with visual disability;
- manufacturing educational material and aids for persons with visual disability, and
- making use of support technology for the education of persons with visual disability.
Competences: Upon completing the PSP of this direction, the graduates are capable of providing persons with visual disability services for special training, education, and rehabilitation.

For the direction of "Special Training, Education and Rehabilitation of Individuals with Intellectual Disability and/or Multiple Disabilities:
Knowledge: The graduates of this direction acquire specialized knowledge over the cognitive domains related to the category of intellectual disability and/or multiple disabilities.
Skills: The graduates of this direction are capable of:
- applying procedures of educational evaluation over functional skills;
- design teaching programmes for students with intellectual disability and/or multiple disabilities, and
- select methods, techniques and implementation means for the various special educational programmes, with emphasis on adult-oriented approach.
Competences: Upon completing the PSP of this direction, the graduates are capable of providing persons with intellectual disability and/or multiple disabilities services for special training, education, and rehabilitation.

For Direction "Special Training and Education of Individuals with Mild Educational Needs":
Knowledge: The graduates of this direction acquire specialized knowledge over the cognitive domains related to the category of mild educational needs.
Skills: The graduates of this direction are capable of:
- applying procedures of educational evaluation in the fields of Reading, Writing, Mathematics, and Social Skills;
- designing teaching programmes for students belonging to the various categories of mild educational needs;
- selecting methods, techniques and implementation means for the various special educational programmes;
- creating and implementing programmes of educational and social integration.
Competences: Upon completing the PSP of this direction, the graduates are capable of providing persons with mild educational needs services for special training, education, and social integration.

Further Information

The Department of Educational and Social Policy of the University of Macedonia has been operating since 2014-2015 academic year a Postgraduate Studies Programme titled "Special Education and Rehabilitation: Visual Disability, Mild Educational Needs, Intellectual Disability, Multiple Disabilities". The PSP was established and operates based on Ministerial Decisions no. 1952/18-7-2014, which approved the programme, and in accordance with the Bylaws approved by the General Assembly of Special Composition (GASC) of the Department, during its 20th meeting, on 23-01-2014.
This PSP aims to the investigation, development, adjustment, and dissemination of modern approaches for the special education and rehabilitation of special groups of the population, and specifically for the persons with disabilities and/or special educational needs. In particular, the purpose of the programme is the provision of specialised knowledge and the development of skills on issues concerning the following:
(a) Special Education and Rehabilitation of individuals with Visual Disability.
(b) Special Education and Rehabilitation of Individuals with Intellectual Disability and/or Multiple Disabilities.
(c) Special Education of Individuals with Mild Educational Needs.

Relation To Employment


The postgraduate title of studies Master of Arts in "Special Education and Rehabilitation: Visual Disability, Mild Special Educational Needs, Intellectual Disabilities, Multiple Disabilities" comprises an additional formal qualification for its holders - provide they hold the basic titles of studies (degree) provided by the law - in order to work in public and private bodies of special training and rehabilitation and in School Units for Special Training and Education. The general and the specific purposes, the structure, and the curriculum of the present Postgraduate Studies Programme allow persons acquiring the relevant title to establish their pedagogical proficiency, which shall allow them to participate in recruitment procedures held by the Supreme Council for Civil Personnel Selection (ASEP) or other bodies, concerning positions of educational functionaries. Specifically, the graduates of the PSP shall be able to work in agencies, units, and structures providing services to persons with disabilities and/or specific educational needs, such as general schools of the primary and secondary education (Nursery, Elementary School, Lower Secondary School, Upper Secondary School), and in School Units of Special Training and Education (Special Nurseries, Special Elementary Schools, Departments for Integration in the Primary and Secondary Education, Special Lower and Upper Secondary Schools, Technical Vocational Schools of Special Education, Laboratories of Special Vocational Education and Training). In addition, they can cover the needs for workforce of the central public bodies of education, such as the agencies of the Ministry for Education, of the Institute for Educational Policy, of Research Centres, of public bodies of education at a local and regional level, of non-profitable organisations, of non-government organisations and private bodies, which provide work in the field of Special Training and Education and in the field of Education and Rehabilitation for persons with visual disability, mild educational needs and intellectual disability / multiple disabilities. The graduates may also participate in the conduct of educational research, in the study and preparation of educational programmes, as well as in the development and application of educational policies and practices that are focused on the education of individuals belonging to the aforementioned categories.

Transitions

Access to this type of qualification have those who hold a Bachelor Degree (level 6). The selection of graduate students is mainly based on the following criteria: the overall grade of the Bachelor Degree, the grades in undergraduate courses that are relevant with the subjects of the Master’s program, the performance in thesis, where is foreseen at the undergraduate level and any research activity of the candidate. The detailed application of the above mentioned criteria, the definition of additional criteria or the conducting of examinations and interviews, the results of which are taken into account in the selection, are determined by decision of the relevant Department.
Holders of such qualifications gain access to study programmes at the same level or at level 8.

Qualifications of this type are acquired via formal education.
