Master's Degree in "Politics and Applied Methods for the Protection of the Environment". Department of Civil Engineering. Faculty of Engineering. Piraeus University of Applied Sciences (former Technological Educational Institute of Piraeus).

Description

Knowledge:
The graduate of the MSc in "Policies and Applied Methods for the Protection of the Environment" explores key concepts, the methodological axes and, especially, implementation of environmental policies. Deepening in these items, not just in theory but - especially - in applied level is a key educational and research orientation of the Postgraduate Program which essentially differentiates it from all currently existing graduate programs in the Universities in the broader field of environmental sciences. In particular, for graduates with a basic degree from Departments and Schools of Engineering disciplines, the content of the Postgraduate Program significantly expands their professional and academic fields and gives them the background knowledge to be able to respond quickly to respective labour market and academic research needs, expanding their theoretical and practical knowledge on the environmental aspect of design and construction and how to protect the natural and human environment, both at the level of the corresponding techniques, and in terms of procedures and their implementation policies.

Skills: The skills acquired by graduates based on curriculum are those of a specialized scientific staff who could either develop (or coordinate) an applied research program, or join directly the labour market and meet the growing business demand observed internationally in this field, both in the private and in the public sector. It allows thus graduates to develop and manage - for example - issues of environmental impact studies - and Preliminary Environmental Assessment studies -, offers special scientific knowledge so that they can contribute to urban, planning and development studies where Designer degrees of category 27 are needed, independently develop the main subject of urban or regional planning study ( Designer degrees of category 1 or 2), draft expert opinions, certifications, environmental audits or staff enterprises whose turnover has a substantial environmental component and requires qualified scientific personnel in the object.

Moreover, the epistemic background of the graduates (see Syllabus) in combination with the complex research approach required for the completion of an original thesis (e.g. field and sources research, experimental research, contact with scientific institutions and public services, cooperation with the supervisor, with another student or students, responding to the terms of a framework agreement with a public body), promotes the ability of the graduate to manage predominantly complex problems in the areas of research and application of environment protection techniques and to assess strategies to cope with the respective issues from the perspective of private or public scope.

Further Information

The Master's program is performed in cooperation with the Department of Administration, Management and Marketing of the European University of Cyprus. The qualification is awarded by both institutions.
The aim of the Postgraduate Program is the graduate to act independently in order to solve complex problems that arise within the scope of environmental policies, studies and research or to collaborate with other disciplines and coordinate study groups for the development of interdisciplinary programs in individual sectors of the environmental object.

Course Content:
The curriculum includes courses on issues of applied environmental policies developed at European, national and regional level and on the corresponding institutional tools and implementation and management procedures of environmental protection techniques.

Relation To Employment

Holders of qualifications that belong to this type may work either as self-employed or in positions of responsibility in companies and organizations in the private or in the public sector.

Transitions

Access to this type of qualification have those who hold a Bachelor Degree (level 6). The selection of graduate students is mainly based on the following criteria: the overall grade of the Bachelor Degree, the grades in undergraduate courses that are relevant with the subjects of the Master’s program, the performance in thesis, where is foreseen at the undergraduate level and any research activity of the candidate. The detailed application of the above mentioned criteria, the definition of additional criteria or the conducting of examinations and interviews, the results of which are taken into account in the selection, are determined by decision of the relevant Department.
Holders of such qualifications gain access to study programmes at the same level or at level 8.
