Further Information
The purpose of the Curriculum of the Department of Biomedicine Engineers, of Technological Education, is to provide, with the completion of their studies in the Department, a complete grasp of the knowledge, competences, and skills related to the scientific and professional field of Biomedical Technology, as such are analytically presented in the learning outcomes of the Curriculum.
The studies of the department include the theoretical and applied technological courses of the interdisciplinary branch of Biomedical Technology. This branch refers to any application of technology for the provision of health services, from the level of basic research in Medicine and Biology, to clinical practice. This branch covers the cognitive subjects included firstly in the Engineering Sciences, such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Computer Science, and secondly, Natural Sciences. It also includes details about the approach, in terms of technology applications, of the Medical Sciences and of the Administration and Economy Sciences.
The duration of studies in the department is eight (8) semesters. Each semester includes 30 credits, as per the ECTS system. During the first seven (7) semesters, the studies include theoretical teaching, laboratory practices, manufacturing of devices, study groups, seminars, visits to hospitals, and the conduct of work with emphasis on case studies and teamwork. The last (8th) semester includes practical training in productive organisations of the public or private sector.
The studies in the Department aim for the teaching of the theoretical and applied technological principles in the following fields of the cognitive subject of Biomedical Technology:
Technological applications and theoretical principles of operation of the in vivo and in vitro Diagnostics, which include the devices for capturing bioelectrical and non-electrical biosignals, the modules of medical imaging, and sample analysers.
Technology for Intensive Care and for the Operating Theatre, which include, among others, the support machinery for vital functions.
Technological applications and theoretical principles of operation of Therapeutic Modules, which include, among others, the modules for radiation therapy and electrical therapy modules.
Restoration Technology, i.e. the technological applications and theoretical principles for the operation of the Rehabilitation Modules for Physical Functions. It includes, among others, the use of technology to improve the conditions of life for persons with specific problems and for the creation of artificial limbs and organs.
Bioengineering, which includes theories of engineering, applied to the systems of the human body.
Clinical Engineering, which includes the technology and the techniques for issuing medical decisions and managing the Biomedical Technology, with the purpose of supporting and improving the healthcare systems.
In addition, a supplementary purpose of the studies is to allow the graduates to obtain knowledge on the following:
The organisation, quality control, and quality assurance of Biomedical Technology.
Research methodology, data collection and analysis, writing of studies and composite works, and manufacture structures.
The application of the knowledge obtained, with a suitable practice in work areas.
The practical training in the 8th semester is performed in areas producing medical machinery in private businesses, in hospitals, and in other public or private organisations, in work areas of the relevant specialty, with the purpose of consolidating the knowledge obtained in the previous semester, the provision of the ability to take the initiative, as well as the ability to develop competences for resolving problems and for working in a team.
Finally, the dissertation before graduation allows the student to obtain the experience of in-depth studying for the specialty, either through a manufacturing or a combination work, along with suitable literature review, with emphasis on the development of the student's personal competences.
