The curriculum of the Department of Medical Laboratories covers the subject of Biomedical Laboratories and Technological Applications, as such are noted in the Microbiology, Virology, Haematology, Blood-Donation, Immunology, Biochemistry - Clinical Chemistry, Pharmacokinetics - Toxicology, Histology - Histopathology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Animal Testing Laboratories, etc. The initial curriculum has been modified twice until now: In 1999 and 2008. The last modification is the new programme, upgraded and enriched with modern subjects, which is competitive with programmes of similar foreign educational institutions of higher education. The new programme that is already applied includes 8 semesters with 240 credits (ECTS) in total, and includes practical training in a hospital, along with a dissertation.
Upon completing their 4-year studying, the graduate Technologist of the Department of Medical Laboratories have obtained the necessary specialized and modern scientific knowledge as Technologists of Medical Laboratories, in order to be able to work in every Laboratory field covered by the subject of the Department, while they progress in the Departments of their specialty up to the position of Head of Laboratory.
At an international level, the training for the respective specialty (Medical Laboratory Technologist, MLT or Medical Laboratory Scientist, MLS), has been included already for years in the tertiary education both of the USA and in European countries, and is provided in Universities or University Colleges and in Universities of Applied Sciences respectively, which grant Bachelor and Masters, while some award Ph.Ds. The objectives and the purposes of the Department of Medical Laboratories are similar to those of the US University Departments, which grant a BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY in the US and a BACHELOR OF ΒΙΟMEDICAL SCIENCES in the UK.

The degree is necessary for the laboratory diagnosis of diseases.
Transitions
Access to this type of qualification have those who have completed at least the secondary education (level 4).
Holders of such qualifications gain access to study programmes at the same level or at level 7 or 8.
