Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural Technology. Pathways: a) Greenhouse Crops and Floriculture, b) Crop Production. Department of Agricultural Technology. Faculty of Agricultural Technology and Food Technology and Nutrition. Technological Educational Institute of Peloponnese.

Description

Upon fulfilling the obligations within the context of the undergraduate programme of studies in the field of Agricultural Technology, and depending on the direction chosen, the graduate is capable of understanding all facts, theories, and principles of concern:
- the study and support of modern cultivation techniques and the organisation of organic, integrated and/or conventional plant production;
- the operation of plants in terms of physiology;
- the enemies and the diseases affecting plants and the methods for the protection thereof;
- the principles of nutrition and fertilization;
- the basic principles of agricultural genetics and biotechnology;
- all methods of sexual and asexual propagation;
- the management of the plant material following harvest (post-harvesting technology);
- the design, manufacture, and management of projects for urban green;
- the management of the irrigation water and of the systems for its application and drainage;
- the agricultural automations and the machines used in agriculture;
- the operation of greenhouse units and the management of the cultivation thereof;
- the use of renewable energy sources (RES) in agriculture, and
- the basic principles of agricultural economy, marketing of agricultural products, and the preparation of feasibility studies.

At the same time, the graduate is able to apply the above theoretical knowledge and demonstrate excellent cognitive and practical skills, having acquired competences referring to the following:
a) design and support of modern cultivation techniques;
b) fertilization and plant protection for cultivations;
c) management of agricultural ecosystems and the systems of organic, integrated, and conventional agriculture;
d) production of certified propagation material;
e) post-harvesting treatment of products of plant production (standardisation, maintenance, quality control, etc.);
f) provision of geotechnical advice to cultivators;
g) establishment and operation of stores for the sale and marketing of plant protection products, fertilisers, plants, propagation material, machine tools, and other modern equipment;
h) establishment and operation of analysis laboratories;
i) design and supervision both of the facility and of the cultivations under cover (greenhouse cultivations);
j) operation of agricultural machines;
k) creation of improved and certified genetic and propagating material using standard (nurseries) and modern biotechnology (tissue culture) methods;
l) organization and operation of agricultural operations, and
m) conduct of deratisation and disinsectisation of common areas.
Upon completing their studies, the graduates of the department have the ability of searching for, analysing and composing data and information with the use of the technologies necessary, adjust to new situations, take decisions, work on their own and in a team, in a domestic and international environment, respect diversity and the natural environment, and exercise criticism and self-criticism. In addition, they are capable of making use of the current literature and databases, contributing to the progress of technology and production, through their participation in research programmes.

Further Information

The Department's curriculum covers knowledge concerning the study and support of modern cultivation techniques and the organization of organic, integrated and / or conventional plant production, the organization and operation of farms, the production of certified propagation material, the post-harvest treatment of plant products (standardization, maintenance, quality control, etc.), the fertilization and plant protection of crops, the management of agricultural ecosystems and biological systems, of integrated and conventional agriculture, the provision of geotechnical advice to farmers, the establishment and operation of stores selling plant protection products and fertilizers, plants, propagation materials, tools, machinery and other modern equipment, the establishment and operation of analysis laboratories, the study and supervision of both the establishment and of the covered cultivations (greenhouses), the handling of agricultural machinery in modern mechanization of agriculture, the management of the farm in terms of feasibility, marketing and promotion of agricultural products and the creation of improved and certified genetic and vegetative materials using standard (nurseries) and modern biotechnology (tissue culture) methods.

Relation To Employment

The degree of the Faculty of Food Technology is not connected to a practice license. However, it is necessary for the following:
a) sale and marketing of plant protection products (Government Gazette 1031/ 25 April 2014);
b) marketing of agricultural medicines (P.D.159/2013, issue Α', no. 251/18 November 2013), and
c) the creation of improved and certified propagation material (law 1564/85 concerning the Organisation of production and marketing of the propagation material of plant species (Article 4, par. 2) and Ministerial Decision 1153/16620 of 2014)
