The purpose of the Department of Library Sciences and Information Systems is to train librarians and information scientists who shall work in any kind of library, information centre, archives and cultural organisations of the public or private sector.
The Department aims to the following:
1. Provision of quality education and the preparation of graduates capable of working with social responsibility and respect to the scientific and professional rules.
2. Conduct of research and the production of knowledge in every field of Library - Information Science.
3. Development of interdisciplinary collaborations.
4. Interconnection with social, productive, and cultural bodies.
The Department has a modern curriculum that goes in parallel with scientific developments and the requirements of the labour market, while covering subjects related to the collection, organisation, management, and use of information and of its sources, while focusing on the technologies of information and communications.
The basic subjects taught by the curriculum are the following:
A. The role of information in modern time.
B. Sources, services, and collections of information.
C. Organisation and management of information - administration of libraries and information centres.
D. IT education and IT literacy.
E. IT systems and digital libraries.
Relation To Employment
The degree in Library Science and Information Systems is necessary in order to work as a Librarian, Information Scientist, Archivist and Taxonomist. The professional rights of the graduates of the Department of Library Science and Information Systems have been established by Presidential Decree 385/1989 (Government Gazette 169/16-6-89/issue A). The graduates of the Department of Library Science and Information Systems of the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics of Alexander Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki, based on their specialized scientific and technical knowledge work, either on their own or in collaboration with other scientists in the private and public sector, as specified by the applicable clauses, engaged with the study, research, and application of modern technology in the organization and operation of libraries of all types, i.e.: National Library - Central Libraries (Parliament Library, etc.), Academic Libraries (Tertiary Education - School Libraries), Folk Libraries (Municipal, Community, etc.), Special Research Libraries, Documentation Centres, Archives, Museums and other cultural organisations and knowledge management organisations.
Transitions
Access to this type of qualification have those who have completed at least the secondary education (level 4).
Holders of such qualifications gain access to study programmes at the same level or at level 7 or 8.
