Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science. Department of Environment. Faculty of Environment. University of the Aegean.

Description

Knowledge: The graduate acquires knowledge about the in-depth understanding of the structure and mechanisms for the operation of the environment and its interaction with man and society, including the basic positive and theoretical sciences.
Skills: The graduate can apply the acquired knowledge on the analysis and evaluation of the environmental problems and on the composition of plans for the resolution thereof, based on spherical, multi-faceted and balance treatment. The practical skills acquired by the learner include the collection of environmental samples and data, the processing thereof (conduct of chemical and biological analyses, statistical analysis), the development or application of simulation software (modelling), the processing of geographical and satellite data, and the application of analysis methods for social and financial data.
Competences: The graduate is capable of proceeding with the integrated treatment of environmental problems, drafting or organising the drafting of environmental impact studies and environment management studies, and assess the application of the environmental legislation and of the measures used for managing the environment. The graduate may engage professionally with issues regarding the pollution of the environment, the management of ecosystems and biodiversity, the management and processing of natural resources and wastes, renewable energy sources, environmental policy, regional development and environmental education. These competences are acquired through a programme of practical training, conducted in organisations of possible future employment.
Learning outcomes:
- Acquisition of knowledge for the structure and the operation mechanisms of the environment and of the environmental problems.
- Development of skills for the analysis and evaluation of environmental problems.
- Acquisition of practical skills for the management of environmental samples, data, and methods for processing and analysis.

Further Information

The purpose of the Undergraduate Programme of Studies of the Department for the Environment is the creation of scientists who are capable of understanding and analysing the environment and the environmental problems, preparing plans and programmes for managing the environment, while also dealing with environmental problems. The studies include courses of basic and applied sciences and of environmental policy and management, which fall under the scientific fields for the management of ecosystems and biodiversity, environmental engineering, management of natural resources (energy, water, etc.), and economic and social issues concerning the environment. The structure of the curriculum is focused on interdisciplinary approach. The educational procedure is supported by Biology, Chemistry, GIS, and remote sensing laboratories, as well as by research laboratories, specialised on specific issues of environmental sciences.
