The curriculum aims to the theoretical and practical teaching of the cognitive and practical skills required to exercise the profession of Radiation Medicine Technologist. It covers all three fields: Medical imagine, nuclear medicine, and radiation therapy oncology, with special focus on quality control, safety, radiation physics and radiation protection. The studies in the Department of Radiologic Technologies provide theoretical and objective knowledge that enable the graduate to perform the following: a) Conduct and evaluate the imaging, radio-isotope and radiation treatment operations falling into his/her authority, b) operate and understand the operation of the necessary equipment, and examine its safe operation on everyday practice, c) be capable to communicate, operate with safety, and deal with the patient, d) collaborate with a constructive manner with the remaining personnel of Health Services in order to manage patients and at administrative level, in agreement with the principles of Professional Ethics and Bioethics.
Relation To Employment
The issuing of the professional license and the use of the title "Technologist Radiologist" require a Degree from the Department of Radiology of the School of Health and Welfare Professions by Technological Educational Institutions (TEI) or another equal and respective degree, as defined in Presidential Decree 160/2014 - Government Gazette A 242 - 07.11.2014. The professional rights are described in Government Gazette 118 / A / 14.6.1996, P.D.164. The Graduates of the Department of Radiology perform all imaging, radioisotope and radiotherapeutic practices, following instructions by Radiologists, Nuclear Medicine Physicians, Radiation Oncology Physicians, and evaluate the quality results of such practices. 1. In MEDICAL IMAGING DEPARTMENTS: They are responsible for the projective visualization and the quality processing of the image. Also, for the functionality of Radiology chambers, of the darkroom and of the other areas of the Department. During fluoroscopy or any other application, they assist the radiologists. They scrupulously respect the provisions of the Radiation Protection Regulations. They participate in procurement committees for radiological units. They attend to the supply of consumables. They have to exercise quality control. They are responsible for the proper registration of all medical records relating to the examination. They participate in the research work of the Department. 2. In the DEPARTMENTS OF NUCLEAR MEDICINE:
They record and keep any radioisotopes used in the special caches, along with radioactive waste.
They are responsible for preparing diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals, identify and measure the dose thereof, in partnership with Hospital Physicians.
They strictly observe the Radiation Protection Regulations and in the event of radioactive contamination, they inform the persons responsible for radiation protection.
They perform measurements, record them and communicate them to the physician responsible.
They care for the excellent quality of IN VIVO tests, using the appropriate method in combination with modern technology. In case of a problem, they inform Hospital physicists.
They are responsible for attending to the proper registration of all medical records concerning the patient and the examination carried out.
They are responsible for the proper operation of the developing room of the Department.
They check and supervise the special areas for administering therapeutic doses of radiation and perform measurements for radiation protection, with the cooperation of the Radiation Protection officer.
They attend to the supply of consumables by cooperating with the doctors of the Department.
They participate in the research work of the Department.
They attend to the supply of consumables and reagents in cooperation with the manager.
They attend to the cleanliness and arrangement of devices, instruments etc. in the laboratory. The number of these graduates per c-Camera depends on the needs of the Hospital.
3. In the DEPARTMENTS OF ONCOLOGY RADIATION THERAPY.
They are responsible for implementing the patient's treatment plan, as predefined by the Department's responsible persons, in accordance with the principles of Dosimetry for each incident.
They monitor the operation of the equipment and in case of damage update the relevant service book.
They cooperate in the construction of protective blocks and casts according to the plan for Radiation Therapy.
They are responsible for attending to the proper registration of all medical records, concerning the patient and the radiation therapy examination performed.
They participate in the research work of the Department.
They carefully maintain and exploit the conditions of the Radiation Protection Regulations.
They help in the measurements of practical dosimetry.
They expose to radiation platelets, blood plasma and other elements of the human body, serving other Departments of the Hospital or Research Centres, following the consent of the Department of Radiation Oncology.
Transitions
Access to this type of qualification have those who have completed at least the secondary education (level 4).
Holders of such qualifications gain access to study programmes at the same level or at level 7 or 8.
